Why we do what we do

We have been consistently asked by dog owners for help. We ourselves understand the frustration that surrounds having a pet in discomfort or pain - we have been there ourselves with our own french bulldog Ruby and her allergies as a puppy and are delighted to say that we have come out the other side smiling - we now want to help you along your journey.

We have spent years learning about nutrition and striving to bring out the best quality nutritional supplements with our brand Ruby Reese and have recently undertaken hundreds of hours of canine nutrition courses and certifications to round out and formalise our base of knowledge and be able to help you.

Our philosophy

Canine nutrition is quite the minefield these days, with an array of apparent experts shouting extreme viewpoints from the rooftops. We at dognutrition.ie look at your dog as an individual and work to their needs and to your situation and feeding wishes - we understand every household has different ways of working and we think it is essential to match your lifestyle with the way your dog is fed so that it can be a long-term success and not a burden.

We are entirely open to discuss all types of feeding methods and will not make you feed one way or another. We can guide you on raw feeding, home cooked diets, kibble, wet/tinned foods and more - the most important thing is that a nutrition plan works for both you and your dog, contains all of their essential nutrients adequately (complete and balanced species-appropriate diet) while also covering your dog’s individual needs.

Working as a network

We fully believe that a complete and balanced diet tailored exactly to your dog’s needs is a brilliant way to support their health and immune system and a key element to them living a long, happy and fulfilling life.

In saying this, our role as canine nutritionists has its limitations and the diagnosis of illness, prescription of medication and curing of disease is reserved for the veterinary practice.

We are more than happy to work alongside vets and indeed other pet professionals including dog trainers, behaviourists and canine physiotherapists to create an integrated plan for dogs with any particular individual needs - a well suited diet is likely to support the success all of these areas.

Packages we offer

All our plans include the following:

- Evaluation of your dog's current situation

- Regular check-ins

- Time for your questions

If you don't see a plan that suits you above, please still reach out to us for a discovery call below, providing some details on what your dog is struggling with - we will be happy to make a bespoke plan for you or help you find the support you need from our network.

FAQ

Dog Nutrition

Can you do dog nutrition consultations online?

Yes, at dognutrition.ie we are able to offer entirely online consultation sessions. For clients in Ireland, we are also be able to organise phone as well as face-to-face consultations.

Do you specialise in dog nutrition in Ireland?

Yes, we specialise in dog nutrition in Ireland because we live here and have a deep understanding of the nutritional products available here.

Do you offer canine nutrition plans outside of Ireland?

Although our main focus is to serve the dogs of Ireland (because we live here ourselves and know the products and market well), we are open to discussing working on consultations with dogs globally. We have lived in Germany and Spain ourselves in the past and are happy to work with clients on what is available to them locally, wherever that may be.

How does a dog nutrition consultation work?

We start with a free discovery call to make sure we offer what you are looking for. We use this call to understand your dog’s and your needs and put together a plan of action. If we decide to proceed, we will usually have a first consultation call, where we speak through the different options in detail. Following this, an individual nutrition plan is made for your dog/dogs. We will typically have a further consultation to talk through any of your questions after the plan is sent to you. We also have a consultation period open for your questions or any adaptations that are needed to the plan.

FAQ

Specific Needs

Can I get a canine nutrition plan tailored to my dog’s needs?

Yes, we tailor a nutrition plan to your dog’s needs as well as your own - we always want a plan to fit your household and lifestyle and feel manageable.

Do I have to pay for two plans if I have two dogs?

No, you do not have to pay for two separate plans for two dogs - we will work out an individual package for you depending on each dog’s needs but usually you will want to keep similar elements.

Can you create a diet to support my dog’s individual medical needs?

Yes, we can help formulating individual nutrition plans that help support your dog with their medical needs and your vet’s plans. We are happy to work with other dog professionals that support your dog. Diets to specific needs such as pancreatitis, allergies, canine obesity, hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, patellar luxation etc. can be formulated.

How should I feed my dog so they loose weight at a healthy pace?

Dogs should only lose between 1% and 1.5% of their body weight per week and balancing their nutritional needs while reducing their energy intake requires careful planning by a professional. We can support your dog’s healthy weight loss with a plan tailored to their needs to ensure they get the nutrients they need, while they lose weight.

FAQ

Dog Allergies

Should my dog get an allergy test?

No, we do not recommend allergy tests for your dog - allergen tests conducted on fur and saliva samples are not proven to be effective and are typically rejected by the scientific community. If you read the small print, most of these tests state they are not appropriate for diagnosis. Antigen tests conducted on blood samples are also not very reliable as they cannot detect intolerances and can frequently have both false positives and false negatives. We recommend our clients save their money on these tests and conduct a rigorous elimination diet.

Can you help me with an elimination diet for my dog’s allergies?

Yes, we can help you the whole way through an elimination diet and also a food trial with your dog to find out exactly what they are and are not allergic to. This process requires dedication, but is so rewarding when we have lots of choice and options after identifying the allergens.

Can dogs have food intolerances?

Yes, alongside food allergies, dogs can also have food sensitivities and intolerances

Is hypoallergenic food good for dogs with allergies?

Hypoallergenic dog food is usually only a short term fix, which may be used during an elimination diet. This form of feeding can be very restrictive and not necessarily a good option for long-term feeding. The meaning of hypoallergenic can differ from feed to feed, sometimes referring to a single animal protein and other times to hydrolysed protein, both of which some dogs may still show allergic reactions to.

FAQ
