At Ruby Reese we are particularly interested in natural supplements for joint health, particularly because our own French Bulldog, Ruby, has both luxating patella and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). We always like to take a holistic approach to Ruby’s health and wellbeing and have always seen the best results with combining dietary supplements, medication under veterinary advice and rehabilitation with a canine physiotherapist.
One of the supplements we give Ruby on a daily basis is our green-lipped mussel (GLM) powder, which is mixed into her food. There is evidence from studies suggesting that GLM supplements can be beneficial for dogs with IVDD. GLM contains a unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids, glycosaminoglycans, and other bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory and joint-supporting properties. Here are some key points from relevant studies:
Anti-Inflammatory Effects:
GLM is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial in managing conditions like IVDD that involve inflammation of the spinal discs and surrounding tissues. A study published in the journal "Veterinary Journal" found that dogs with osteoarthritis showed significant improvements in pain and mobility when given GLM supplements, which implies potential benefits for IVDD as well.
Pain Management and Mobility:
Another study in ‘Research in Veterinary Science’ demonstrated that GLM supplementation led to improvements in clinical signs of pain and mobility in dogs with degenerative joint diseases, which are often used as a proxy for evaluating treatments for IVDD due to similar underlying inflammatory mechanisms.
Joint and Cartilage Health:
GLM is rich in glycosaminoglycans, which are essential for maintaining healthy cartilage and joints. This is particularly relevant for dogs with IVDD as the health of the intervertebral discs relies on similar nutrients. According to a study published in "American Journal of Veterinary Research," GLM supplements helped maintain joint health and reduced cartilage degradation in dogs.
While these studies focus on the benefits of GLM in conditions similar to IVDD, direct studies on GLM's effects specifically on IVDD are limited. However, the underlying mechanisms of action suggest that GLM could be a supportive supplement for dogs suffering from IVDD due to its anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and joint-supporting properties. For Ruby we are of course also really happy to have a supplement that is nutritionally rich with lots of vitamins and minerals too.
