Moro Carrot Soup for Dogs: A Natural Remedy for Diarrhoea

Moro carrot soup, originally developed by Austrian paediatrician Dr. Ernst Moro, is a powerful home remedy used for over a century to treat gastrointestinal issues. Today, it’s recognised not just in human medicine, but also in veterinary nutrition—especially for treating diarrhoea in dogs.

But what makes it so effective?

Why Moro Soup Works

The secret lies in oligosaccharides, special sugar molecules that are formed when carrots are cooked for a long time. These molecules can bind to the lining of the intestines and effectively compete with harmful bacteria for attachment sites. As a result, pathogens are less likely to settle in the gut and are expelled more easily through the digestive process.

Additionally, carrots are rich in vitamins (A, C, K), minerals like potassium, and soluble fibre, which support overall gut health and recovery.

Recipe: How to Make Moro Carrot Soup for Dogs

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 1.5–2 hours

Storage: Keeps for 2 days in the fridge

Ingredients:

  • 500 g (about 1 lb) carrots
  • 1 litre (4 cups) water
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and chop the carrots into small pieces.
  2. Bring 1 litre of water to a boil, then add the carrots.
  3. Simmer the carrots gently for 1.5 to 2 hours. This long cooking time is essential to develop the gut-healing oligosaccharides.
  4. Once the carrots are very soft, purée the soup thoroughly until smooth.
  5. Add some boiled water to bring the volume back to 1 litre. The final consistency should be similar to thick buttermilk.
  6. Add a small pinch of salt (optional, especially if your vet recommends it).

Allow the soup to cool to room temperature before serving.

Feeding Guidelines for Dogs

  • Feed the soup in small portions, about 30 ml per kg of body weight per day, split across 4–5 meals.
  • Offer the soup about 30 minutes before regular meals to help prepare the gut and calm irritation.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Always warm to room temperature before serving.

Example: A 10 kg dog would receive around 300 ml of soup spread out over the day.

Tips & Notes

  • Moro soup is not a replacement for veterinary care. If your dog has severe or prolonged diarrhoea, always consult your veterinarian.
  • It's especially useful in acute cases, like after a dietary indiscretion or mild gastrointestinal upset.
  • Can be combined with other bland diet staples once your dog begins to recover.
